The town of Hoopeston, IL is ranked as having one of the top holiday lights shows, but unfortunately when I showed up there wasn’t much snow on the ground.

Seeing a holiday light show in a drive-thru experience should be easy, fun and entertaining for the whole family, especially moms and kids. I was genuinely excited to drive 90 minutes to Hoopeston, Illinois to check out what was ranked as one of the top ten holiday lights displays in the state. However, when I followed Google Maps on GPS, the directions didn’t make sense and I got lost. After asking a local woman for directions, I came upon a locked entrance to a VFW Memorial Park. Luckily with some persistence I came to find an alternate entry and was able to drive through. Yet for a community event, I was the only person in the park exploring the light show.

Perhaps it was too far after the Christmas holiday season for anyone to be seeking out holiday lights. This taught me a few valuable lessons: make sure people can find your community event, choose appropriate dates and times to host it, and work with local businesses to cross promote sponsorship so people can find something to eat or do after they drive all the way to your community event.
